The Great Big Cookie Decorating Party

Goodness gracious and heavens to Betsy (as my mother would say).

We had the biggest and best cooking decorating party this year - EVER!

If you follow my blog, you know that our family has a cookie decorating tradition. In the 37 year history of my marriage to Hubby D, we have never missed a year without putting holiday colored butter cream icing (Grandma Tudy's recipe) on crispy vanilla cut out cookies.

Here are some cookie decorating pictures from Christmas past.

For 2017 our family gathered in our new Viera, Florida kitchen. All three children from BHB's family (little LW included), granddaughter MVL and grandson BSJ along with Grandpa DM, Hubby D and myself all worked together mixing, baking and decorating. BHB and son-in-law RB came along later in time for dinner with cookies for dessert. It was quite a crew.

Here are the highlights.

The day started early with the mixing of the cookie dough. We mixed 6 complete recipes.
The cookie dough was so good, MVL licked the bowl clean. LOL

Grandson BSJ called this creation the dancing penguins.
This was serious work. (By the way, MVL and BSJ worked for MANY hours cutting and baking. MVL managed to finish all the baking and clean up while I went to schools and picked up all the kids with BSJ. She is a super woman cook!)

LW puts some icing on....
And, them some comes off.
I can almost hear him thinking, "I wonder if the blue taste like the white?"

There were MANY beautiful masterpieces. Almost (remember I said "almost") too good to eat.

Here is the entire cooking and decorating crew. We finished with almost 200 cookies.

I can safely say, we are ready for Santa Claus.  I will just have to make sure they last that long. Maybe I will hide a few to save for Santa. LOL . . . yummmmm

Cheers,
Brenda

Memories of Bahrain

This morning as I was working on the blog of our trip to Europe, I received this wonderful email from a dear friend, JA who is in Bahrain but getting ready to move back to the States. I asked if I could share her email so here it is. it was lovely and brought tears to my eyes. What wonderful memories I have of Bahrain. THANKS, JA.

Brenda,

I went for a stroll on your island today. I can see why you loved it.

I often felt that a walk along the water front was what was missing from Bahrain. All the places I could walk were ugly, dirty and smelly. Places such as where I ran; the Juffair corniche or the lagoon in Muharraq.

This is what Bahrain sadly needs in more places.

There was a lovely breeze today.

Waves lapped on the rocks.

It was warm on the lagoon side.

Lastly, the flamingos.

Finally on the Road Again!

The Italian town of Como and Lake Como are only a few hours drive from Genoa on the coast of Italy. And, it was a fun drive!

We went around Milano and into the mountains. Hubby D was getting used to the car and I was enjoying seeing the countryside go by.

We passed several highway rest stops with gas stations.  The restaurant areas were very big, but I never saw more than 4 pumps in any one gas station. No massive lines of gas pumps like we experienced in Texas.

There were also many unusual architectural structures along the way as well as very long tunnels.

Even the power lines were interesting.

And, we started seeing bell towers.  It was very odd. When we were on the train, we would pass small towns and look at them. We never really had the time to look at them intently.

Now we had time to pick out buildings and look at the differences in the structures.  As we saw in Spain, the small towns still had high-rise apartment buildings. Even the smallest town had multiple churches. And, each church had a bell tower.

One particular bell tower really reminded Hubby D of a World War II movie. He said, “Get a sniper up in that bell tower.” And, he was right. It looked just like in the war movies. Maybe like the movie Saving Private Ryan.

From then on every time we saw a bell tower, one of us would say, “There’s a good place for a sniper.”  Guess we have seen too many war movies.

Pretty soon we started seeing tall mountains with snow. It was great.

The resort town of Como on the edge of Lake Como is pretty much shut down in the fall and winter. Most of the restaurants and hotels are closed. This actually turned out to be fantastic. There were no crowds and all the people were very, very friendly as well as relaxed. It was just perfect.

Our hotel, one of the few open was right on the lake and was very quaint. We also had a great view from our room.

The keys to the room were large metal keys and you gave it back to the desk clerk every time you went out. Very quaint.
This is the view from one of the three windows in our room.  There was a really wonderful view from all of them.
Our first adventure was to take a ferry ride around the lake. It was cold, but really beautiful.

We had some extra time so we decided because we were so close we would drive to the Swiss border.

Here is the "drive through" Swiss border.
We have a good friend who lived in Switzerland and she had told us many times how wonderful it is.  This was really not a good taste of the country, but it was fun to do.

After we arrived back to the hotel, we left on foot in search of wine and cheese to make snacks so we could watch the town come to life after sunset from the windows in our room.

Our next search was for a good local restaurant for dinner. We discovered one that was just right.

A husband and wife team along with one helper ran the restaurant. They were amazing and the food was terrific.

Our appetizer was this wonderful bread stuffed with cheese.

The next morning we packed up the car and headed to Spello, Italy.

We were really looking forward to being in one place for more than a day or two. AND, our friends had told us so much about Spello that we were really looking forward to being there.

Ciao,

Brenda

Birthday Celebration at Disney World

A big surprise!

BHB invited us to go with her family to Disney World to celebrate Hubby D's birthday. It was great fun and I thought you might enjoy some of our photos.

LW was most excited about riding on the steam engine train!

Here is a video I shot while we were waiting for the train to start moving. If you are reading this in an email, you will have to go to my blog to watch the video. https://brendahyde.blogspot.com

The day was great, LW was extremely well behaved and we had a great time!

LW, what does a train say? ChooChoo!

Taking a break on moms shoulders. His chin was like a spike when he rested it on her head.

Let me help!

Resting between dad's legs.

Watching Mickey Mouse in a show.
We ended the day with Hubby D and LW's favorite - ICE CREAM Disney style!

Cheers,
Brenda
